The supervisor search includes filters for field of research, country, and institution type. Here's how to use them effectively.

Field filter

Select one or more fields to restrict results to supervisors in that discipline. This works alongside your profile keywords — the field filter narrows the candidate pool, and keyword matching ranks within that pool.

If you're applying across disciplines (e.g. computational biology spanning biology and computer science), select multiple fields or leave the filter unset and rely on keyword matching alone.

Country filter

Scholr covers supervisors primarily at Canadian and US institutions, with expanding coverage in the UK, Australia, and Europe. Select a country to restrict results to that region.

Note that geographic restrictions interact with funding: some scholarship programs (NSERC, for example) are restricted to Canadian institutions. If you're planning to apply for Canadian scholarships, filtering to Canada will show you eligible supervisors.

Institution filter

You can filter by specific universities if you have constraints around location, program ranking, or existing connections. Searching by institution alongside keywords is a good way to identify all relevant supervisors at a target school.

Saving search settings

Your filter settings persist within a session but are not saved across sessions. If you run the same search regularly, note your filter configuration or save individual supervisors to your list using the bookmark icon.
